connecting custom formatter to tableView column

Hi list,
Could somebody tell me how to connect a custom formatter to a tableView column. I am now using a NSTextFieldCell , dragged into the tableView column header, with it’s formatter outlet connected to the custom formatter. This somehow causes the formatted to be called more often then apparently necessary , for instance when another window is made key window.
