It depend on what you mean by list box object...? :-)

...but yeah the thinking in Cocoa is often why have a dedicated object for something that is an edge case or mode of a more capable object.

Poke around in this document for an idea on the standard widgets and metaphors that Mac OS X supports/encourages (at least most of them).
