This is actually a good question, and is one I've been thinking about
for a little while. At our shop we have one or two programmers that do
nothing but live and breathe Java to the point that they attempt to use
it for everything. In my opinion, this is like spending all of your
time learning how to use a hammer. You may get to the point where you
can do quite a few things with a hammer, including pounding in screws,
tenderizing meat, or even making ice sculptures -- if you can, more
power to you. However, in my opinion, if you want to get a job done,
you pick a tool that will get you there quickest and with least
resistance. Sometimes that tool is a hammer, inappropriate or not,
because you know it well and it gets the job done. Most often, however,
a good screwdriver does the job better, cleaner, and with not that
large of a learning curve.
A good developer strives for both depth and breadth in his knowledge --
they are not mutually exclusive. Here's a question for you: what's
preventing you from getting real good at several technologies?
Anyway, that my $0.02.
Regards,
Mike

real good in one.
