AddressBook records outside AB

I'm trying to build a list of people and I want to give the user the option to have these people in their addressbook. My first thought was to store information in ABPerson and then add it to the addressBook when and if desired. But I'm having problems to use ABPerson objects outside of the addressBook. Any value I set is lost if not saved in the addressBook. Does anybody have any experience from this? Is it not possible to use ABPerson on its own?
