I want to what good tools are availble (freeware if possible,
shareware if necessary) for creating icons for my Cocoa and Carbon
apps.
I tried serching google and versiontracker, but (especially on
Google) I got so many matches on the word Icon that the search was
for all practically purposes useless.
On the free (but harder to use) side is the 3D renderer POV-ray. I
hand coded a .pov file in BBEdit and ran it through POV-ray to
create the icon for my MacOSaiX program (the page linked below
shows the icon). Once you have the image to your liking you can
change the texture on all objects to a matte black and generate
your mask. Takes a lot of tweaking to get just right but you end
up with gorgeous results.

How about IconFamily by Troy Stephens - I hear great things about it.
