Well, one of the most difficult and random things, in my experience,
is getting the people who would buy your app to find out about it. I
don't think there's a magic solution to that, and it's frustrating
because you have so little real control over it. You can polish your
app and make it rock-solid reliable, but you can't easily make people
find out about it.
What?
Sure you can. It's called marketing :)
Easier said than done IMO. Like development itself, marketing requires
you to know what you're doing. I bet it can be very frustrating if you
don't happen to know what you should do to promote your stuff. I am
just a student writing freeware so I haven't had the opportunity to be
very frustrated, but I don't think I would know how to promote a
shareware app if I had one, apart from getting it listed on download
sites. I could possibly go as far as buying a few ad exposures
somewhere, but I simply don't know what actually works. Perhaps it
just takes experience trying different things to find the best ways to
promote shareware.
Hopefully there are good articles about this on the internet.
Googling...
