I know the regular toolbar does not allow to exceed 32*32, but is there
a class i could override to perform this? I looked around and could not
find any lead so far.

From the toolbar documentation at

"The displayed resolution of an image item is 32x32. If an image is
larger or smaller or not square, the toolbar scales it to 32x32
(forcing it to be square), at a cost in performance and appearance."
In other words, 32x32 is a fixed limit & can't be exceeded.
