Newbie: General question

  • Subject: Newbie: General question

Would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction (in broad terms) re the following hypothetical
situation.

I have an application that performs some task. The user starts by opening the application, doing some set-up and pressing a 'go' button. Once the go button is pressed the task may take a long time to complete.

1.) Is it possible to keep the task running in the background (like in a shell) and allow the user to attach and detach to it as and when they please?

2.) Can the task be kept running even when the user logs out?

Many thanks

John
