It is true that the HIG says to close the first sheet before opening the
second, but that's just another way of saying never nest sheets. The HIG
does not suggest reopening the first sheet, but we can't draw any conclusion
from that one way or the other because the HIG can't go into that much
detail.

My position is that nested sheets are cleaner and less confusing than
sequential sheets, and your suggestion of reopening the first sheet seems
even worse to me in terms of user experience.

In my scenario, if the secondary sheet is dismissed with a "don't replace"
answer, the primary sheet remains in place ready for the user to select
another file without having to reopen the sheet again. The user is kept
on-task.
