I'd definitely recommend Edward's accessory view suggestion in favor of the nested sheets. There are various ways (colors, different shapes and item positions, a short one-time-animation) you can use to make it obvious to your users that something important changed in the accessory view.


Showing the contents in the accessory view for non-conflicting items might not be that smart, though, because it makes it harder for users to notice that something changed down there. If a text "Conflict:" in bold pops up in there *and* a text field listing the contents and how they conflict, that's a much larger (visual) change and thus harder to miss than if it's just a small red "conflict!" text field.
