Actually, I think the all-or-nothing part of Apple's authentication services
is the lame part. Either I give an app carte blanche to do whatever as root
or the operation executes as the current user.

I'd much rather have an Apple supplied API that uses an Apple tool as well
as authentication services to copy the files, so Auth-Services can tell me
what is being copied/moved/whatever to and from where... Apple's Installer
could be the first app to use this.

I agree entirely. I tried to hint at this at the end of my previous post, but I think I missed the point in my writing.

The problem really is building some uber-app to do all these common tasks (or many little apps; whatever)... they need to have an interface which suits the use of any program which might want to use them, which is no mean feat even for "trivial" tasks like copying files. There's also the callback issues, design issues (i.e. asynchronous design, as I mentioned previously), etc.

Still, I'd like to see Apple focus their attention on such things.

Of course, there's still no way for the end-user to know if the dialog is
the real Authentication-Services dialog or just a tool by third- party to
capture the user's password.

Yes, I've always found the big emphasis on Auth Services to be amusing for just this reason. There are ways to present "secure" dialogs, but many of those pursued have been comical at best - like Microsoft's proposal of writing your favourite pet's name in a border around the window.

But then, if it works...
