FWIW, the first thing I do on any OS X install is chmod /
Applications to my own user. Maybe it's a hang-over from Classic
MacOS, but having to "authorise" myself every time I install or
remove an app is just stupid.
Yes, I know of ~/Applications, but I refuse to perform the mental
juggling act required to remember which apps are where.

This wouldn't be such a problem if Apple's installers would not be
so stubbornly stupid about locating (or not locating, as is in fact
the case) existing installations.
