My application has lost the focus ring (the blue ring highlighted around controls) completely, in each an every control; from NSTextField to NSTableView cells, in every window and dialog. And I do not know how this could happen.

Is it just your application or all applications? You can control it here:

System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Full keyboard access: All controls. (To change the setting, press Control+7 - maybe you've done just that?)
