NSFontDescriptor origin question.

Is NSFontDescriptor actually used in OS X internally or is it just a pretty abstraction class to CTFontDescriptor or ATS?

I'm just wondering it NSFontDescriptor has the same "problems" with fonts that NSFont does. Namely that neither appear to like platform fonts (ATSFontRef) which gets rid of the problem caused by duplicate font names.
