options for connecting to socket

the pictureSharingBrowser example is crashing when connecting from Panther to Tiger.

I'm wondering if there is another way to connect which would avoid this error.
this is the line which hangs:

connect(socketToRemoteServer, (struct sockaddr *)socketAddress, sizeof(*socketAddress))

I can't get any info out of errno and the function returns nothing.
is there antoher way to do this?
