Maximum file name length?

I've searched the archives and found questions without answers. I've searched the documentation and learned nothing.

How do I know what the maximum allowed filename length is for a given file system?

NSFileManager comes close with fileSystemAttributesAtPath in that it gives me meta-data about the path, but it tells me nothing of the format of the drive or path lengths or file name lengths or anything useful.

(If you say "try Carbon" please also reference a function because that's lacking this information as well as far as I can tell ...)

Thanks!
