You're right, it's a backup file created by Interface Builder
(uncheck button "Create backup file when saving" in IB preferences if
you don't want them to be created). I don't put them under source
control.

MainMenu~.nib seems to get created.
I keep thinking it is some kind of intermediate file that does not
