In my experience, there is no way to predict with 100% certainty
which version of your app will get chosen to open a document. For
this reason, I've always found it important to ensure that only one
copy of my app exists on the computer during testing, and have
encouraged users to make sure that "stale copies" are not on their
computer if they witness weird behavior.
I have *literally* observed the system alternating back and forth
between two copies of an application, on subsequent launches. I
don't know if it's gotten any better in 10.4 or not.
One thing I've noticed is that the system does seem to prefer
applications in the "Applications" folder of the main disk. If you
want to increase the odds of your newer one getting chosen, for
testing purposes, then it might be wise to drop it in there.
Also, the system will almost always (maybe always) use an already
launched copy of your application, to the exclusion of any other copy
on disk. This is again mostly only useful for testing purposes.

Hi,
any time I double click on a file created with my application, the
Finder
launches an old version of my application and not the latest version.
No matter if the older version has an older creation and
modification date.
I compile defining a version string for the application, which I
suppose
doesn't help. What should I set to let the Finder recognize the latest
version?
