I've downloaded the files via CVS and only the linking fails, but how do we overcome this?

My guess would be you need to get the missing source files, and make sure they're compiled in. That's why the linker is failing, because some classes haven't been defined. So either it's some source files that don't get compiled in, or you have some preprocessor flags that are project-specific set that comment out those files.
