The OP explained what the intent was, and it's really exactly in line with the historical intended use of that Gestalt selector. I'm going to be quite disappointed if Uli's suspicion about Gestalt proves correct and there's no functional replacement.

If you are after the last few perfomance-percents, ...

If you are after stuff like endianness of ints and floats, ...

And if you're after gathering specific information about the machines deployed at a site for informational and support purposes?
