I'm not sure about others, but I'm having the impression that this is
one of those questions that's best-answered by the question "What are
you really trying to accomplish?" As in, what's the goal of
determining whether a path goes "clockwise?"

Wrong impression. :-)

I have no idea what he is trying to do, but the orientation of a closed path is used broadly throughout computer graphics and computational geometry. Just for a tiny start read the docs on NSWindingRule (in the section on NSBezierPath).
