Determining whether a file is currently open in another application

I'd like to be able, on attempting to open a file, determine whether it is already open in another app.

I thought there might be a way to do this using NSWorkspace, but could not find anything. If anyone has experience with a clean way of doing this I'd be very grateful to hear it!

Thanks,

Rick
