So [[fontPanel windowController] window] was returning nil. So the question is how else would I access the window controller for the font panel? Or do I need to open a new window myself? I tried this, but all the commands seem to open a window via a nib reference.

Are you sure that [[fontPanel windowController] window] and [self window] returns non-nil values? Verify!
