The desktop is a fairly reasonable place to put it, at least in the short term. At least it doesn't feel like "sneaky littering" of the disk. However, even early on in your development you could add an NSSavePanel requesting that the user provide their chosen output directory. That would probably be better, and doesn't require preference settings.
