validateForDelete result ignored

I've implemented validateForDelete in my NSManagedObject subclass which I can see working in the debugger. In the situation where the delete should not succeed, it returns NO. Yes, the delete goes through and the document can be saved without errors. How do I really validate deletes?

Also, how do I validate immediately in table columns? Setting NSValidatesImmediately to YES has no apparent effect.
