Three pages from the official docs on this topic:

<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ObjectiveC/ LanguageOverview/chapter_3_section_3.html>

<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ CodingGuidelines/Articles/FrameworkImpl.html>

<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/ universal_binary/universal_binary_tips/chapter_5_section_17.html>

It's a bit unfortunate that these three links doesn't quite tell the same story. Note that the second page allows BOOL, int, pointer, besides object! I've filed a bug report on the documentation to see if they can clarify their position on this topic.
