Copying unreleased UI elements
Copying unreleased UI elements

Several times it has come up while developing UIs for my applications
and I wanted to know if there was a definitive answer regarding the
usage of Apple unreleased widgets. For example, in Mail there is a
square pop up for choosing the signature to use. Now, I can probably
open up Mail's nib and get the images for this and use it in my app.
The argument in favor here is that Apple wants consistency, and when
a UI element has spread throughout large portions of the OS it almost
becomes expected. This was particularly true before the search text
field was released and many of us simply hacked one together.
However, I am not sure about Apple's legal stance on this. Am I a)
allowed to take the image and hack it together myself, b) allowed to
simulate it as long as I create the images myself, even if I am
somehow able to create them exactly as they look in the original app,
or c) not allowed to emulate them at all.
Any help with this topic is greatly appreciated,
