NSArrayController and validating menu items

I have a NSPopupButton bound to arrangedObjects of an NSArrayController. I'd like to disable certain menu items - ideally on the basis of another value in the objects maintained by the NSArrayController.
However there doesn't seem to be a specific enable/disable item binding option - all I can find that seems helpful is validateMenuItem at the NSObjectController level - to use that it seems like I must subclass the NSArrayController. This seems a 'little heavy handed' - is there a bindings way to do this that I'm missing ?
Thanks
