Okay, so I still don't understand why setting the selectionIndex binding affects the representedObject for an NSPopUpButton, but I discovered why I was not able to query the ArrayController to find the selected object: I had neglected to make the binding in IB. Sigh.

Sorry to cause everyone trouble.
