Indexing extensions/files

  • Subject: Indexing extensions/files

I was wondering if there was a standard way of indexing extensions for a program. For example, if you have a number of files that may fluctuate in the application support folder, should you at startup read through all of them, or possibly cache and check mod dates? What is the accepted way of doing this?

Thanks in advance,
