Simply read a value when using core data ?

Hello,

I'm new with core data. My application starts a document and show a sheet asking
the user to enter a first name and a last name (which are attributes of People entity
in my model).

What i want to do is do not call the sheet if the first name and the last name
was already filled (for example in a previous use of this document).

So my question is how to know - programmatically - the content value of my people entity ?
I don't know if i should use the controller or something else (i.e. core data APIs).

Thx for the help,
K.
