This should work for volumes and folders:

/Developer/Tools/CpMac VolumeIcon.icns /Volumes/
MyVolume/.VolumeIcon.icns
/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a C /Volumes/MyVolume



I'd be happy to learn differently, but for folders, it still seems to be true that the filename must be "Icon\r/", with its invisible bit set, with the icon in an 'icns' resource of ID -16455 in the file's resource fork.

At least, this is what the Finder continues to do in 10.4.2.
