Interface Builder: making changes to instance (view) hierarchy

Is there a way to avoid having to rework things in IB should one want
to make a change in the instance hierarchy? I may be doing something
wrong as instances seem fairly brittle if you attempt to move them
around in the hierarchy. For example, if a custom view has been
added and then Make subviews of->Scroll View is applied, there seems
to be no easy way to get rid of the Scroll View at a later date
without deleting the instance hierarchy and starting over. (i.e.
delete the hierarchy (Scroll View->Custom View) then add back the
custom view along with any needed connections.) Is there a quicker/
better way to accomplish this?
Thanks,
Phil
