Making an iTunes style bar

Hey guys;

http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/8553/example2wg.jpg

I saw some code (I think) on CocoaDev for making a highlighted bar
like on the left side of this picture. Does anyone know about making
one like the right side?

Or, may someone just explain the logic behind creating bars like this?
 I understand you would overwrite the method that draws the selected
row. How would it would as far as not overwriting the text, getting
it the right size, having it be erased when you move, and getting the
gradient?

I'm not asking for a handout, just some info on the reasoning why this
stuff works?

Thank you
Bobby
