Spotlight search notification?

I am writing a little app that needs to keep track of spotlight searches from the spotlight menu all the time. I know that it puts the search terms on the find pasteboard, so getting that is no problem.

What I am trying to figure out is how to know when a spotlight search is performed so I can check the pasteboard. As always, I want to avoid polling if possible. It doesn't look like any distributed notifications are posted, so thats not an option

This might just not be possible as of now, but does anyone have any ideas?
