That makes me feel less silly then, as I initially assumed what have
been trying to tell me before I noticed this whole problem.
I count 14 bindings through "File's Owner" in that nib, and trapping
the retain method shows a call stack that looks like establishing
bindings from the symbol names.
So it's likely the bindings retaining the owner.

No, it's the way your nib files work, not nib files in general.
There's something special about these nib files. Perhaps bindings
like you suggested in your original message in this thread. I don't
know, but like I said, it would be interesting to find out what it is.
