Trying my original sample code with gcc 4.0.1, I cannot reproduce
the crashing issue. The code doesn't compile properly, of course,
because it's not actually valid, but it fails as you'd expect,
with appropriate error messages.
So, I guess my specific issue was fixed at some point. Thus, I'd
recommend again that the original poster submit a bug report.
Did you try compiling it with "Precompile Prefix Header" switched
on? This is the only factor I can find which has any degree of
consistency: i.e. switching it off always enables the target to
build without problems - switching it on does *not*, however,
always cause the GCC crash - at least not in my test project.
I followed my original instructions, which were just to use gcc on
the command line without any parameters. Repeating that now doesn't
show up the problem. I nearly always turn off pre-compiled headers
(ironically enough, because compiles are way slower than without), so
I doubt that being enabled would have been my original problem.
This inconsistency is something of a barrier against submitting a
bug report. I can't reproduce the crash reliably except in my
original project. I'm thinking maybe I've got a machine-specific
issue; maybe a corrupt file somewhere.
That does make it more difficult, yes, but it's worth having
something in there, on record, about the issue. And even if you only
have part of the puzzle figured out, someone else may have another
part, so it may all be useful nonetheless.
