action on unmodified keyboard shortcuts

Hi everyone,
I want to pop up a text field when the user starts typing. I don't want the
user to have to press something like: Command-T, to bring it up, just start
typing and up it comes, with the already typed text in it. Also I want to
make something happen when the arrows are pressed.
