It's off topic, but we had the language first. You should ask why
Americans took the 'u' *out* of colour. ;-)
This is a very common misconception caused by not knowing all
the facts. Historians have dated the first records of a working
terran time travel device at around the 26th century of the
dark age. One such device has been recovered from 17th century
antartica, and it was traced back to the first time travel
operations center built on earth, which eventually allowed
a complete reconstruction of the early missions.
Back then, earth was pretty much under outside pressure, and
they were attempting to accelerate their development, including
manipulation of the primary timeline. Previous attempts had
failed miserably (for obvious reasons, as we all know), so they
tried a more subtle approach. Earth development was delayed
for several centuries as religious fanatics had most of the
power, and science or even just knowledge wasn't part of their
agenda.
So, the mission CV374 objective was to secretly teach people,
in an attempt to accelerate the breakdown of the religious
regime. However, back then it was quite difficult to "see"
timeline changes, since the change would also affect the
future --- so nothing ever (apparently) changed for anyone
inside the changed timeline. So, when teaching people to
write, they deliberately took some liberties, making subtle
changes to the spelling or even changing whole words to
completely artificial ones for a small, comparatively
isolated group of people living on a small island. These
changes were carefully crafted to contain a message --- it
was expected that someone would notice the deviations and
that careful examination would reveal the message, thereby
sending it across the timeline change.
The mission was a partial success --- the teaching effort
did cut down the time needed to get rid of the religious
suppression, but nobody knew since the message-sending
did not work out as they had hoped, so they never knew
that such a mission has taken place until historians
discovered it.
Earth people never really studied the deviations added into
the language, or they had the completely wrong idea,
assuming that the changed versions were the original ones
and the rest of the world had changed them for some reason.
As a side effect, however, having multiple versions of
essentially the same language did speed up the process of
establishing common terran on earth by several years,
and helped with the adoption of galac as well due to the
simple fact that earth's people had more time to experience
the benefits of a common language.
