Design.
A Splash screen is not only a window instead of a loading bar - as you can
clearly see if you look at e.g. Photoshop CS's.
It is a piece of art introducing the program and sort of a legal disclaimer
at the same time (No one would ever ask: what do you hope to accomplish with
the lion at the beginning of a MGM movie?).
I am an apple user since the MacPlus around 1990 or so. And the reason for
this decision has always been 50% MacOS 50% mac design.
I always wondered why they decided to come up with all that iLife software
without splash screens
(btw, look at the simple but genius white splash screens of the apple pro
series...)
