Subclassing NSPopupButtonCell

I'm looking for some pointers on subclassing NSPopupButtonCell. I only want to change the look of the popup, not the functionality which is why I was planning to change the cell (is this right?). From Apple's docs I know I'm need to override initImageCell: and I assume I'll need to override drawWithFrame:, but thats where my ideas stop. Any pointers on specifics of how to do this?
