Hello,
do please forgive me for kinda OT (it would belong rather to the
admin list, but I've found it the less responsive the more technical
the question is, and this one touches the Kernel Authorisation API
which I fear is technical enough :))
Well, scanning some debates on Web (namely, the cause of PathFinder
and other apps installing an Input Manager without telling the user)
I've got a very rough idea: now, I am asking whether (a) Apple plays
with such an idea for long long time, or (b) it is downright stupid
anyway, or (c) it is a news and looks interesting. In case of (a) or
(b) I shall just forget it :), if (c) applies, I shall think it
through much more thoroughly and then perhaps post an feature request :)
The idea is actually quite simple:
(i) it may be nice if the user could mark any folder "guarded",
means, whomever tries to save whatever there, the user would be
alerted (and could fail the attempt);
(ii) some folders (namely Input Managers, but probably anything which
can contain Apple-recognised plug-ins) could be guarded this way by
default (switchable off if the user decides so, of course);
(iii) there used to be suggestions to use Folder Actions in a similar
way, but that is inefficient and not quite dependable. Now it could
be implemented in a much more efficient (and very dependable) way
through the Kauth API (which is, I believe, used for Spotlight
anyway, thus the change in the Apple code would be comparatively small).
Well, now tell me that and why the idea is completely dumb :)
