I just found the solution to my own bug-hunt (An previously editable outline view became uneditable, turns out any subclass of NSTextFieldCell as data cell must be set to editable, something IB obviosly does for you), it cost me lots of time. And I tried to google for a common common place to share the little "gotcha" I found to save others the trouble.
