Added attributes to entity -> Moved values: Why?

After I added attributes to an entity, the values of existing attributes of
instanced entities moved to other attributes after a 'save-old - load new'
cycle.
As far as I understand KVC / C D, I expected that saved data should reload
fine using a new model, as long as I didn't changed the types of attributes
or did other significant changes (e.g. modified entity relations).
Is this normal behaviour? Or does this relate to the format (XML, SQL, binary)
my app saved the model?
