I am embarrassed to admit that I forgot the exact solution.
Anyway after a lot of googling and searching I did hit page (I
believe somewhere at apple.com or one of the popular hint sites). The
solution was something totally unexpected that required deleting some
sort of cache and rebooting.
/Library/Caches
/System/Library/Caches
(and the ones in the home directory).
(Again, this is fetched from my memory, so delete these things at
your own risk)

Is there a way of forcing the launch to happen with rosetta?
I have tried setting the Info.plist to have the key:
<key>LSPrefersPPC</key>
<true/>
but that doesn't seem to have any effect.

Note the "Rosetta: Yes" entry in the crash log. That means the
application was loaded under Rosetta.
