Out of curiosity, did you see this effect on an LCD or a CRT monitor?
I've noticed that some LCDs seem to display shades of gray 'differently' than white (and not just "they're more gray")—I can't put my finger on it, but the effect is more pronounced when I look at the display from an angle.
