Thanks to everyone for all responses!

This is quite eye opening on a number of levels. I believe that there is a large difference between the color characteristics of AM dot based proofing systems (Densitometric Proofers) and the behavior of the SWOP presses these proofers were designed to emulate. As a long time photo-retoucher for print advertising, it is startling to discover that the 'gold-standards' for publication proofing are anything but. I'd say we have been throwing curve balls at pressmen for years and I marvel at their ability to make the catches they have made.

Check out these published values for a SWOP certified Kodak Approval XP running on the older X2222 media set.

		DEN TVI L*a*b
Cyan 1.32 22.7 54.60, -36.10, -40.80
Magenta	1.43 24.0 50.00, 73.53, 0.89
Yellow	0.85 20.1 86.00, -6.11, 80.69
Black 1.63 22.5 16.9, 4.32, 1.54

Do any of these densities conform to the actual density values of a SWOP press on #5 Ground-wood? Yellow seems very low. I see the *a channel in black spiking upwards to a non-neutral 4.32. I do not have a press-sheet in front of me, but something tells me this 'ain't right', yet these are the numbers I must hit to have a SWOP certified XP proofer.

My ultimate concern is using color management to create a custom CMYK separation that is specific for an XP when the numbers and behavior of that device does not appear to emulate SWOP standards. Obviously, I would not want to separate my images into U.S. Web SWOP only to watch them die little deaths on the XP. In fact, I separate them into XP at the appropriate TAC, but it leads me to wonder if I'm now throwing yet another curve ball at my pressman.

Yes! If I could use my inkjet as a contract proof, you'd bet I'd do it!

Thanks again for all comments.
