app used memory

Is there a way using Cocoa to get the amount of memory used by my app, the amount of available memory for my app and a recommended maximum of memory to be used? I have a large cache of image thumbnails and i want to flush it every once in a while, im pretty sure this will help me understand when to actually flush my cache.
