Have you looked at the /Developer/Example/AppKit/OutlineView sample project? That project implements an NSOutlineView with a table data source populated with the local file hierarchy.

See also http://igor.gold.ac.uk/~map01ra/assorted/ NSBrowserBugWorkarounds.zip for much the same with an NSBrowser setup.
