NSSegmentControl behavior different based on focus ring type

All,

I have an NSSegmentControl on a panel (no textured window). I am trying for the clean blue selection (no focus ring). In the awakeFromNib, I set the focus ring type of the segment control to NSFocusRingTypeNone. Initially this does exactly what I want. When the panel displays the selected segment is blue; however, when I select another segment, it turns the newly selected segment grey, leaving the prior selected segment blue. If I click the grey segment again, it becomes blue. This only happens when I have the focus ring type set to none. Anyone else come across this? Any workarounds?
